Our Substances

The Lead REACH Consortium facilitated the successful REACH Registration of 26 substances under its remit for the 2010 deadline, with the substances falling into three categories: lead metal, lead compounds, and complex substances produced as lead industry by-products.

The substance specific sections provide more information about the identity of these registered substances, their classification and labelling under the CLP Regulation, and their identified uses.

Application

Lead and its compounds are employed in a wide range of highly regulated industrial and professional applications. Key downstream sectors and uses for the lead industry include the production and end use of industrial and automotive batteries, lead sheet for construction and healthcare applications, ammunition, and the manufacture of ceramics, frits, and speciality and lead crystal glass.

The uses of the 26 substances registered by the Consortium were originally mapped as part of the Voluntary Risk Assessment for Lead. The identified uses are updated spontaneously as new information becomes available and in light of regulatory changes.

Composition

Differences are seen in the composition of a number of the Consortium’s substances, including lead metal, in part due to the manufacturing process and the intended uses. Specific grades for these substances were therefore defined in consultation with Consortium members and included in the dossiers submitted by the Lead Registrants.

Each substance grade has been classified according to the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation in light of the latest scientific data and knowledge. In doing so, for many of the Lead REACH Consortium substances, industry has proposed self-classification that goes beyond the EU harmonised classification as set out in Annex VI to the CLP Regulation.

Information on the composition and classification for each agreed grade is available in substance grade data sheets in the relevant sections above.
